We are proud to be distributing these Fair Trade Gourd Baskets. These basket sculptures are woven by Zulu women who are very often the breadwinners of the extended family. In rural areas in Africa basket weaving is done in between other household chores. Therefore the important tasks of tending crops and generally keeping the household going are not neglected. However, the money received for basket weaving, means that the women have a cash income which results in greater independence and empowerment. All baskets are woven in the ancient traditional manner with women gathering under a tree to discuss the issues of the day and to share and solve problems. Children play nearby and sometimes try their hand at weaving, and so the tradition continues. On the whole, templates and moulds are not used so each basket is unique. The hand made element is evident and is celebrated. Please be aware that irregularities and creative inputs are encouraged and no two baskets are alike. Imperfections are also celebrated.
